What a patent does

Trade disclosure for a defined right.

A patent gives its owner an exclusive right over an invention for a limited period. In exchange for full disclosure of how the invention works, others can be prevented from making, using, selling, or importing it without permission.

For inventors and businesses, the right filing strategy can turn technical work into a defensible commercial asset. We help clarify the invention, its novelty, and the business outcome before the specification is drafted.

Why patents matter

Make innovation work harder.

  • 01Create exclusive rights that can be enforced against infringement.
  • 02Give investors and commercial partners greater confidence in the technology.
  • 03Open routes to licensing, assignment, collaboration, and monetisation.
  • 04Build a competitive edge that is harder for competitors to copy.
  • 05Support stronger business valuation through a documented IP portfolio.

The patent process

From prior art to grant.

  1. 01

    Patentability and prior art search

We assess novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability against existing disclosures before drafting.

  2. 02

    Draft the specification

We can begin with a provisional specification and later develop the complete specification, including carefully framed claims.

  3. 03

File with the Indian Patent Office

The application and supporting documents are filed with the appropriate forms and priority details.

  4. 04

    Publication

The application is ordinarily published at around 18 months from the filing or priority date, subject to the applicable route.

  5. 05

    Request for examination

A request for examination brings the application before the Patent Office for substantive examination.

  6. 06

Respond to the FER and attend hearings

We prepare responses to the First Examination Report and support written submissions or hearings where required.

  7. 07

    Grant of patent

Once objections are addressed and the application is found allowable, the Patent Office grants the patent.

A practical note: A patent is generally valid for 20 years from the filing date, subject to payment of renewal fees.
