Copyright in India

Put authorship on record.

Copyright protects original expression and gives creators and businesses a stronger record of ownership. Registration is valuable evidence when you need to license, commercialise, or enforce your work.

  • 01Literary works, including books, manuals, articles, and original written content.
  • 02Artistic works such as illustrations, photographs, graphics, and visual compositions.
  • 03Musical works and sound recordings, subject to the applicable filing details.
  • 04Software, websites, databases, and other digital assets where original expression is present.
  • 05Logos and original artwork, with trademark coordination where the logo is used as a brand identifier.

Two phases for logos

Coordinate the right registries.

  1. 01

    Trademark Registry NOC

For artistic works or logos that need it, we coordinate the no-objection certificate from the Trademark Registry before the copyright filing.

  2. 02

    Copyright Office filing

We then file the work and supporting documents with the Copyright Office, keeping the ownership story and supporting evidence aligned.

A practical note: Whether an NOC is needed depends on the nature of the work and how it is being used. We assess that before filing.

General filing workflow

Careful paperwork, handled end to end.

  1. 01

    Prepare Form XIV

Complete the prescribed application with applicant, author, ownership, and work details.

  2. 02

    Add statements of particulars

Describe the work, its title, language, authorship, publication, and other particulars required for examination.

  3. 03

    Deposit copies

Submit the required hard copies and a soft copy in PDF, following the format relevant to the work.

  4. 04

    Receive the diary number

The application receives a diary number, which lets us track the matter and respond to the next stage.

  5. 05

    Handle objections

If an objection is raised, we prepare the response and support the matter through the applicable hearing or clarification.

Documents and timing

Prepare once. File with confidence.

  • 01Applicant details, identity information, and contact details.
  • 02Description and title of the work, including its language and category.
  • 03NOC from the author, publisher, or other owners where it is required.
  • 04Two hard copies of the work plus a soft copy in PDF format.
  • 05Date of publication, if the work has already been published.
  • 06Power of Attorney authorising us to act for the applicant.

A practical note: A typical copyright registration can take a few months, depending on the work, the completeness of the record, and whether objections arise.
